Seek Support from the Local Council

Updated: Jun 22

This wording may help you draft a motion for your parish council to support nature recovery.

This Council notes:

The Government published the Environment Act in 2021 which makes provision about targets, plans and policies for improving the natural environment.

Research shows that people who are more connected with nature are usually happier in life and more likely to report feeling their lives are worthwhile.

South Norfolk Council have endorsed a community participation model which has the support of Natural England.  This has already been adopted by parishes within the district.

There is a growing appreciation for action to support the natural environment.

This Council resolves to:

Support South Norfolk Council in their nature recovery initiatives.  In particular, by progressing the community participation model and registering support with the ‘Our Community Nature Recovery’ collective: www.ournaturerecovery.org.uk

Encourage our community to form a volunteer nature recovery group and support them in taking action.  The Council will appoint a Councillor representative on the group to demonstrate our support.

The model is based on a bottom-up concept of control and delivery by the community with the encouragement of the local Councils.  Responsibility for design and delivery will reside with the community itself.  This Council will provide support where it is considered appropriate.  It will not have any direct role in delivery of the local designs.  In particular, this will involve the Council:

  • publicly endorsing the model;

  • encouraging adoption by the community;

  • supporting the community in delivery of their ideas.
